National Beta is proud to announce Alton High School as a 2018-2019 National School of Distinction and Merit. The School of Distinction Award is an honor for Beta Chapters striving towards academic achievement, exemplary character, demonstrated leadership and service to others. With an ongoing quest to instill these qualities in more students, the National Beta School of Distinction Award is designed to award those schools that show an increase in membership for the current school year. The School of Merit Award is designed to award those schools that offer Beta membership to all eligible grades levels.
Award recipients received a National Beta School of Distinction banner to proudly display as a symbol of their accomplishment. In addition, National Beta School of Distinction recipients will be publicized at the 2019 National Beta Convention in Oklahoma City, OK this June.
“This prestigious honor is a true indication of Alton School’s dedication to academic excellence, leadership development and commitment to celebrating their student’s achievements,” said National Beta’s Chief Executive Officer, Bobby Hart.
In addition to the two club awards from National Beta, three Alton High School Beta students won plaques in their competitive divisions. At state convention, Beta holds competitions in different school subjects. Each club can enter one student to compete in each grade level for one school subject. Freshman Jace Reese won third place in math, and senior Melany Woods won third place in photography, and senior Kelsie Orr won first place in Agriscience. These three students will now travel to National Beta Convention to compete with other students from the United States. Additionally, senior Mikayla Hood won a scholarship to Missouri State University in Springfield.

This month our teacher spotlight shines on Ms. Melissa Childers. Ms. Melissa works as a Paraprofessional in the Special Education Department at Alton Elementary School. She also drives a bus for the district. Ms. Melissa is one of the most caring individuals you will ever meet! She loves the children that she serves as her own. She goes above and beyond to improve the lives of our little Comets. She even uses her own money to pay for things like field trip fees for students who need help coming up with the money! She would not even hesitate to take a child in need into her own home, and voices that she wishes she could do this on a regular basis. Ms. Melissa truly has a heart of gold. She cares about our kiddos. When their hearts break, her heart breaks. She is truly a guardian angel for so many of our sweet kiddoes. She is a beautiful person on the inside and out. She is also such a hard worker! We are so very proud to call Ms. Melissa a Comet! Thank you for all you do for our students! #CometPride #BlessedWithTheBest #AltonElem
